Fifteen kilometres apart: a Sufi shrine eight centuries deep in pilgrims, and one of India's few Brahma temples, beside a lake whose ghats fill at dawn. Six days between them, and Jaipur.

What Sets Us Apart

The dargah, opened

Syed Salman Chishty is the 26th direct descendant of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty. He walks the group through Ajmer Sharif himself, through gates and courtyards that most visitors queue for, and explains what each threshold is for. A satvik lunch is laid inside the precinct beforehand. After dark, the Qawwals of Ajmer Sharif, the shrine's own hereditary singers, perform for the group alone.

The aarti you drum

Nathulal Solanki has played the nagada at the Pushkar ghats for decades. At the evening aarti he hands the drums to the group. You keep the beat the ritual moves to, standing inside it rather than behind the rope.

A fire lit in your name

At the Brahma-Savitri Ved Pathshala, the priests conduct a Maha Mrityunjaya Havan for this group and no one else. Names are taken, intentions are stated, and the fire runs its full course. They still teach the Vedas there by voice alone.
